Confessions Of a Mac Switcher

I must confess to never having owned an iPod, nor any other MP3 player. But last month good friends of mine finally took pity and gave me the best present ever – an iPod touch. Apart from the to-be-expected “0ohs” and “Aahs” over its sleek design and cool built-in applications, it has really been a joy of discovery to find out its many uses.

The first thing you’ll be asked when you plug into iTunes is whether you want to purchase the latest upgrade through the iTunes Store. In my case it was worth the extra money as the upgraded software included the ability to connect to Microsoft Outlook at my workplace, allowing me to track email on my iPod anywhere I go within Wi-Fi range at my college campus. My Outlook calendar also magically synced to my iPod calendar at the same time this mail account was configured.

The thing I’ve enjoyed most about this device is the ability to upload holiday photos and movies via iTunes to show colleagues and friends.  Expect more “0ohs” and “Aahs” when you pinch the screen to zoom in or out, pan an image, or when you initiate photo viewing in slideshow mode.

However, be warned that uploading movies to your Touch may first require you to convert them into a format compatible with an iPod. This is quickly done if you have Quicktime Pro: First open it in Quicktime and choose File > Export.  Then, from the Export dropdown menu, select the Movie to iPod option. Formatting will automatically commence.

The Wi-Fi enabled Safari Web browser is great for checking RSS feeds. No more downtime for me in long drawn out meetings - talk about multitasking. By default the search engine is Google, but can be changed to Yahoo via the Settings application.

Another word of advice: If you keep Wi-Fi permanently switched on, you’ll quickly drain the battery - requiring a recharge every day. To avoid this, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and switch the Wi-Fi option to Off when not checking email or surfing the Web. Simply reverse this procedure when you wish to reconnect to Wi-Fi again.

And let’s not forget the multitude of iPod touch applications that can be downloaded from the iTunes store (many of them free of charge). This is what makes this device truly great; each day cool applications are being devised that extend your iPod touch into an even better personal digital assistant than it already is.

اول سؤال سوف يطرح عليك عندما تفتح برنامج ايتيونز هو اذا ما كنت ترغب في شراء احدث التعديلات من متجر ايتيونز و بالفعل لم اتردد في ذلك حيث ان التحديث الذي اجريتة يشمل امكانية الربط ببرنامج ميكروسوفت اوت لوك الخاص بمكان عملي مما سمح لي بالاطلاع علي بريدي الاليكروني عن طريق الايبود في كل مكان ذهبت الية مغطي بواي فاي (Wi-Fi) كما ان تقويم برنامج اوت لوك توافق مع تقويم جهازي الايبود في نفس اللحظة التي تم التعرف فيها علي الحساب.
الميزة التي تمتعت بها كثيراً هي امكانية تحميل صور و افلام العطلات التي قمت بتصويرها عن طريق برنامج ايتيونز لكي يراها اصدقائي و بالطبع يمكنك تخيل صيحات الاعجاب التي تصدر من الاخرين كلما قمت بتكبير او تصغير الصور او حتي عرضها تتابعياً (slide show).
يجب ان تعلم ان تحميل الافلام علي الايبود قد يتطلب تغيرها الي نمط اخر متعارف علية من قبل ايبود، الامر يتم بمنتهي السهولة اذا كنت تستخدم برنامج (Quicktime Pro)، كل ما عليك فعلة هو فتح Quicktime Pro و اختيار File ثم Export بعد ذلك اختر  Movie to iPod من قائمة Export المنسدلة عندها سيتم تغيير  النمط اوتوماتيكياً
برنامج سفاري لتصفح الانترنت يوفر خاصية عظيمة لتفقد مواقع RSS (احدث التغيرات) مما يوقف اهدار الوقت اثناء اجتماعات العمل.
محرك البحث مضبوط تلقائياً علي موقع Google ولكنك تستطيع تغييرة الي Yahoo من خاصية Settings.
شيء  اخر يجب ان تعلمة و هو ان ابقائك علي Wi-Fi مفتوحاً دائماً يسبب ضعف البطارية و يتطلب شحن الجهاز كل يوم و لكي تتجنب ذلك اذهب الي Settings ثم Wi-Fi ثم اختر خاصية اغلاق الواي فاي عندما تكون لا تتصفح الانترنت او تتفقد بريدك الإلكتروني، و لكي تتصل مجدداً بالانترنت اعكس ما قمت بة.
يجب ان لا ننسي التطبيقات المتعددة التي يمكن تحميلها علي الايبود من خلال متجر ايتيونز- الغالبية العظمي منها مجانية - مما يجعل هذا الجهاز بحق رائع حيث ان هناك دائماً الجديد كل يوم مما يحسن اداء الايبود لكي يصبح مساعدك الشخصي الإلكتروني.
ياللعجب !!! هل ذكرت انكم تستطيعون الاستماع الي الموسيقي عن طريق الايبود؟

Certified Apple Doctor

Q: My recently purchased Mac mini doesn’t seem to see any drives (flash or external HDD – both previously used on a Windows PC) when I plug a drive into its USB sockets. It just shrugs its shoulders and says “yeah well what do you want me to do?” I’m sure I’ve missed something simple.
A: First thing to try is to see if the drive works on another Mac and see if some other USB device works on your mini. You should also check it with Disk Utility. If it works on another Mac, copy the data off of it, reformat it, and then it might work on the mini.

Q: I recently purchased a 3G iPhone from another country which works on a Turbo Sim. I loaded the Etisalat Card with the Turbo SIM and the phone started working, but after a while I noticed that the connectivity is no longer available and it says (on the top left corner of the screen) “No Service”. When I try looking up the phone Network and I select Automatic it does not connect, but still shows the following networks as available: Etisalat 3G, Etisalat, Du, Du 3G. What should I do?
A: I don’t think there’s much you can do. This seems to be a common problem with all the SIM-card attachments for unlocking iPhone 3G. You can try to get another Turbo SIM or other similar card, but until there’s a software unlock for the new iPhone, you may not get it working as a phone unfortunately.

Q: I always leave my iPod touch plugged into my Mac all night long to recharge. Is it OK to have it plugged into a computer for such a long time, or does this practice affect its battery life?
A: You should be okay. Any such device has a limited number of recharges and good practice is to totally drain it once in a while to keep it in best possible condition. So perhaps once a week or so let it run totally out of charge, then charge it again and you should have the iPod touch run for a long time.

Q: Time Machine does not find disk, although properly connected to brand new hard drive. Would you know what to do?
A: You need to connect the drive to a Mac first and format it for Mac. Many times when you get a new hard drive it’s formatted in FAT32 or NTFS, and for Time Machine to work it needs to be in Mac format. Use Disk Utility to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If after that it still doesn’t seem to be recognized by the Time Machine, consider exchanging it for a new drive.

What’s In Your Bag?

There is really not much to be said about my bag. It’s a Mont Blanc document holder really, which I’ve taken as a computer bag for my MacBook Air. It typically holds the Mac, a Mont Blanc pen, and some business cards. As an architect and designer, it’s important for me to have something stylish to take with me when I meet clients but it also needs to be light because I travel around a lot.

Tutorial: Apple Style Reflection in Photoshop

You know the cool interfaces and looks Apple creates in their software and on their web site? It’s often shiny, glossy, has shadows and reflections are everywhere. You can make reflections yourself really easy in applications like KeyNote and Pages just by clicking one button. It’s not quite that easy in Photoshop but we’ll show you how you can create a high-quality reflection in just a few easy steps. We’ll work with a text but the same principle can be applied to a photograph.

هل ترى الاشكال التى تبتكرها ابل على برامجها و على موقعها الاليكترونى. انها  ظلال و انعكاسات مشرقة و جميلة فى كل مكان. تستطيع ان تبتكرها بنفسك فى بعض البرامج مثل KeyNote  و Pages بمجرد ضغطة زر. الامر ليس بهذة السهولة فى برنامج Photoshop ولكننا سوف نريك كيف تنشأ انعكاسات فائقة الجودة فى بضع خطوات يسيرة. سنأخذ هنا مثالا على نص الا ان الامر يسرى ايضا بنفس الكيفية عتى الصور.

Step 1

Open or create the picture you are going to work with. In our case we start with a bit of white text on a black background. Note that the text and the background are on separate layers.

الخطوة الاولى:
أفتح او أنشأ الصورة التى تود العمل عليها. فى هذا المثال سوف نبدأ بنص ذو لون ابيض و خلفية سوداء. يجب ان تلاحظ ان كل من النص و الخلفية يجب ان يكونا على طبقتين (Layer ) مختلفين.

Step 2

Select the text layer, and in the drop down menu for the Layers palette select Duplicate Layer to make a copy of it.

الخطوة الثانية:
أختر ( Layer )  الخاص بالنص, ثم افتح قائمة (Layer ) المنسدلة و أ ختر منها (Layer Duplicate).

Step 3

Give the duplicate layer a name. I’m going to call it “shuffle reflection” because this layer will be the reflection of the text.

الخطوة الثالثة:
الان يجب ان تعطى اسما للنسخة التى صنعناها, سوف اسميها هنا ( انعكاس Shuffle) أو (Shuffle reflection) لان هذا اللير( Layer) سوف يكون انعكاس النص.

Step 4

Move the “shuffle reflection” text down a bit so it approximately meets up with the bottom of the “shuffle” text.

الخطوة الرابعة:
حرك نص ( انعكاس Shuffle) الى الاسفل بعض الشىْ حتى يتلاقى مع اسفل نص (Shuffle) الاصلى.

Step 5

With the “shuffle reflection” layer selected, go to Layer > Rasterize > Type. This turns the reflection text into a graphic. Now you can no longer edit the text.

الخطوة الخامسة:
أختر ( Layer) ( انعكاس Shuffle) ثم أذهب بالترتيب الى الى قائمة (Layer) ثم (Rasterize) ثم (Type) تلك الاختيارات سوف تحول النص الى جرافيك.

Step 6

Still with the “shuffle reflection” layer selected, go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical.

الخطوة السادسة:
أستمر فى اختيار ( انعكاس Shuffle) ثم أختر (Edit) ثم (Transform) ثم (Flip Vertical).

Step 7

Still with the “shuffle reflection” layer selected, click on the Add Layer Mask button in the Layer Palette.

الخطوة السابعة:
أستمر فى اختيار ( انعكاس Shuffle) ثم أذهب الى قائمة ( Layer Palette) و أختر (Add Layer Mask).

Step 8

You can now notice that the “shuffle reflection” layer has changed its look in the Layers Palette and another icon has appeared next to it, that’s the mask.

الخطوة الثامنة:
يمكنك ان تلاحظ الان ان انعكاس Shuffle تغير شكلة فى قائمة (Layer Palette) كما ان ايقونة جديدة ظهرت بجانبة تبدو مثل القناع.

Step 9

Now select the Gradient Tool from the main toolbar.

الخطوة التاسعة:
الان اختر ( Gradient) من قائمة (Tool Bar) الاساسية.

Step 10

Position the cursor in the reflection and click and drag it down. Release and you’ll see the effect. You will have to try this step a few times to get it right. You can also start dragging outside the reflection text if you want.

الخطوة العاشرة:
ضع سهم الماوس Cursor فى الانعكاس ثم اسحب الى الاسفل ثم اترك سهم الماوس و سوف ترى الاثر. ربما سوف تضطر الى القيام بهذة الخطوة بضع مرات حتى تقوم بها بالشكل الصحيح, و يمكنك ايضا القيام بالسحب خارج النص اذا اردت.

Step 11

You can now notice that the mask icon in the Layers Palette has changed to look like a gradient.

الخطوة الحادية عشرة:
الان يمكنك ان تلاحظ ان ايقونة القناع قد تغيرت فى قائمة ( Layer Palette) و اصبحت تبدو كما االظل.

Step 12

Now you can crop, flatten and export the finished picture as desired and use it on the web, or wherever else you want.

الخطوة الثانية عشرة:
الان يمكنك ان تقطع او تسطح الصورة كما شئت و تستخدمها على الانتر نت او باى شكل ترغب فية.

Some People Will Never Switch - And Nor Should We Want Them To

Isn’t it funny how sometimes you just come up against a situation when you feel like you’re banging your head against a wall without getting anywhere? That happened recently when I was trying to talk to a die-hard Windows user about why he should consider a Mac instead. He argued the same old things: Mac is too expensive, there’s no software for Mac, etc. The same old story we’ve heard for over twenty years now. And to be honest there was really nothing I could tell him that would have convinced him to switch. It was kind of like the two sides dug in at the trenches of the Western Front in World War I. Neither side could really make any advance, even after years of battle.

Let’s face it, some people on the other side will never switch – and nor should we want them to. Whether someone picks Windows or Mac is largely up to their personal preference and what makes sense for them in that situation. And Mac is not always the best, or even the desirable choice. That’s where many in the Apple-community go wrong, I think, when trying to argue for Apple and Mac. They think Apple and their products are the magical solution to everything, and they’re not. And the sooner we all realize that, the better. The discussion with potential switchers would then be more realistic, less confrontational and less polarized. We will try to do our best in Shuffle to make that happen.

أو ليس من الطريف ان تجد نفسك احيانا و كأنك تضرب رأسك فى الحائط بدون جدوى. لقد حدث نفس الموقف لى مؤخرا عندما كنت اتحدث مع احد مستخدمى ويندوز المتعصبين حيث كنت اخبرة بانة يجب ان يفكر فى استخدام ماك الا انة تعلل بنفس الحجج القديمة وهى ارتفاع اثمان ماك و عدم وجود برامج لة.
نفس القصة القديمة التى نسمعها منذ عشرين عاما. بالفعل لم يكن هناك ما يمكن ان اقولة لكى اجعلة يتحول الى ماك و بدا الامر أشبة بخصمين فى خنادق الجبهة الغربية اثناء الحرب العالمية الاو لى حيث لم يستطع اى طرف تحقيق تقدم على الاخر حتى بعد مرور سنوات من المعركة.
يجب ان نعترف ان هناك اشخاص لن يتحولوا و نحن لا نود لهم ان يتحولوا. ان استعمال ماك او ويندوز مسألة اختيار فى المقام الاول حسبما يترأى لكل شخص. ليس بالضرورة ان ماك دائما الاختيار الافضل.
الكثيرين من مستخدمى ابل يرتكبون خطأ عندما يتحدثون عن ابل او ماك على انهما الحل السحرى لكل شىْ.
النقاش مع من يودون التحول يجب ان يكون اكثر واقعية و اقل حدة وسوف نحاول فى Shuffle ان نحقق هذا.

Apples at Sun

Sun Microsystems and Apple Computer have a long history together. Sun considered buying Apple in the mid-1990s, the companies also nearly merged on two other occasions, as well as almost co-operating on a number of technical projects, according to Bill Joy, one of Sun’s founders. Both companies have always been the maverick of their markets, relying on quality products and innovation over the power of mass marketing.

The Sun of 2008 is much more than the Unix workstation and server company of the mid 90s, with a product range that encompasses everything from the Java programming language, to business integration software, thin client technology and x64 servers. Solaris, Sun’s Unix operating system, is the platform of choice for telcos, banks and business customers around the world.
Gil Amelio was in charge at Apple when Sun looked at buying the company in 1996. With Steve Jobs back we’ve all seen Apple’s star rise again – the iPod, the move to OS X, the move to Intel, etc. Shuffle readers are well aware of what our favourite consumer tech company has achieved.

In recent years, co-operation between Sun and Apple has continued. Apple have integrated Sun’s open source Dtrace code into OS X. Dtrace helps programmers diagnose performance bottlenecks in their code. Apple have also integrated Sun’s open source 128bit ZFS file system into OS X server. ZFS allows for TBs of storage to be easily managed across multiple drives with no single point of failure.
How else are Sun and Apple co-operating? The clue lies in the MacBook I’m using to write this article. For years, particularly since the advent of the Unix based OS X, Sun engineers have preferred Macs over the Windows or Linux alternative. Non-travelling employees use a Sun Ray thin client to access a Solaris desktop. Company issued laptops, however, have always been Toshibas. Over the last few months however, Macs have been added as an option.
Every Sun office I visit these days has employees poring over their shiny new Macs. Internal aliases have been set up for Mac newbies – most new owners at Sun are using a Mac for the first time in many years, myself included. We’re also finding ourselves buying other Apple products for our own personal use as well.

Who knows what might have happened had the mergers gone ahead? Either way, thanks to Sun, I’ve been able to switch. What if I get fed up with OS X? Well, I can always put OpenSolaris on this lovely Apple branded piece of hardware.

Mac of the Month: Mac mini

Performance
Even though the Mac mini is very small, it’s no slouch when it comes to performance. With a 1.83GHz or 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo processor it will take on most tasks with ease. Don’t expect to do heavy 3D rendering quickly on the mini though.

الاداء:-
بالرغم من صغر حجم Mac mini الا ان اداءة رائع ، بمعالج ١.٨ او ٢.٠ Core 2 Duo يستطيع ان يقوم باغلب المهام بسهولة ولكن لا تتوقع ان تمم وظائف 3D بالسرعة المطلوبة.

Memory
It has two slots for SODIMM memory, maxing out at a total of 2GB RAM. This is not great but should be enough for most everyday tasks.

الذاكرة:-
الجهاز بة مكان لذاكرة صوديم .  قدرتة القصوي تصل الي 2 جيجا بايت. و هذا ليس بالامر الرائع و لكن يكفي للقيام بمعظم المهام اليومية.

Communications
The mini is well equipped with 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet, 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme wireless networking, and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR. You can also get Apple’s optional external Apple USB Modem if you need to connect to phone line.

الاتصالات:-
الجهاز مزود ١٠٠٠/١٠٠/١٠ جيجا بايت ايثر نت بالاضافة الي نظام AirPort Extreme الشبكي و بولوتوث. كما يمكن الحصول علي Apple UBS Modem اذا ما اردت توصيلة بالهاتف.

Display and Graphics
The mini uses similar integrated graphics to the MacBook. Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics, taking up 64MB of the main RAM for video, is not for those who desire to play the latest video games but it works very nicely as a media center.

الاوضاع و الرسومات:-
الجهاز يستخدم رسومات مشابه للرسومات المستخدمة في MacBook تشغل حيز ٦٤ ميجا بايت من مساحة القرص الرئيسي للفيديو -مما لا يكفي لمن  قد يرغبون في مشاهدة احدث افلام الفيديو- و لكنها تعمل بشكل جيد.

Storage

Standard options are 80GB or 120GB 5400RPM drive but you can go for the optional 160GB drive. Depending on which model you pick, you also get a CD or DVD writer.

التخزين:-
الامكانيات المتاحة هي ٨٠ و ١٢٠ جيجا بايت الا انة من الممكن اختيار Drive ذو ١٦٠ جيجابايت، وفقاًٍ للموديل الذي تختارة يمكنك الحصول علي وحدة CD او DVD.

Expandability
The Mac mini is probably the least expandable Mac, notebooks including. It’s not really expandable internally, which is understandable due to its size. Basically all you can do is expand by USB and FireWire ports.

زيادة السعة:-
يعتبر الجهاز من اقل انواع Mac التي يمكن زيادة سعتها و هو امر مفهوم و فقاً لحجمة. الزيادة الوحيدة الممكنة عن طريق UBSاو Firewire.

Export HTML Gallery With Expression Media

Expression Media comes as a part of Microsoft Office 2008 Special Media Edition. You can also buy it on its own. It’s basically an application for managing digital media files, including photos. You can download a trial version of Expression Media 2 for Mac from http://www.microsoft.com/expression/try-it/Default.aspx.

Step 1

Create your document and consider carefully how you want it to appear on the web. Remember what works in print doesn’t always work on the web.

Step 2

You can work away normally in Word, but if you switch to the Web Layout mode you will find it easier to create nice web pages. You switch mode by going to View > Web Layout.

Step 3

If you type in a hyperlink, e.g. “http://www.emiratesmac.com” and hit enter, Word will recognize it as a hyperlink and make it blue and underlined. If you need to edit a hyperlink, right-click on it and select Hyperlink > Edit Hyperlink.

Step 4

When you’re happy with your web page, go to File > Save as Web page.

Step 5

In the dialog box that opens, click the Web Options button. Here you can enter a title for the page and keywords. Click the OK button and then the Save button.

Step 6

Now you can upload your web page to a server so it’s published online.

iPhoto ‘08: Tips and Tricks

Although iPhoto is a relatively easy to use application, it can really pay off to get to know it, especially if you’re a frequent photographer. Here we present just a handful of tips and tricks.

Editing
iPhoto has many editing features like resizing, cropping, and functions for enhancing photos. It’s certainly not as powerful as Photoshop but you’d be surprised what you can actually do from within iPhoto.

Full Screen
To turn on full screen, click on the two diagonal arrows in the bottom-left corner. In full screen mode you get to enjoy your photographs in all their glory across the entire screen.

Rating
Click the info button in the bottom-left corner and give your photos some stars. You can create a smart album for your top-starred photos. It’s also an easy way to organize photos as you can quickly find good and bad ones.

اضغط على زر info   فى اسفل يسار الجهاز وأبدأ بتقييم صورك بواسطة النجوم كما يمكنك ان تنشىِ البوم ذكى وفقا لاعلى نسبة تقييم للصور كما ان الامر مفيد فيما يتعلق بتقسيم الصور حسب جودتها.

Front Row
Increase the fun by adding all your photos as events in iPhoto, and then watch them as presentations in FrontRow. Events are time-based, so it could be a wedding, a party, or a vacation.

الالبومات الذكية Smart Album
اختر (الالبوم الذكى) (smart album)  من مربع البوم جديد حيث ستجد مجموعة متنوعة من الامكانيات , على سبيل المثال اختر ( تقييمى) .My Rating
لكل ما هو اكثر من ثلاث نجوم و سمة أفضل الصور بعد ذلك كل الصور ذات الثلاث نجوم واكثر سوف تظهر في الالبوم.

Batch Change
Select a few photos, then from Photos menu select Batch Change. From here you can batch process multiple things. The easiest example is to change the name of photos by appending a number. This makes it easy to change many photos quickly.

التغيير الجماعى Batch Change
اختر مجموعة من الصور ثم اضغط من قائمة الصور على خيار التغيير الجماعى Batch Change, اسهل شىء يمكن ان تقوم بة هو تغيير اسم الصور باضافة رقم. تلك الخاصية
من سوف تساعدك علي تغيير العديد من الصور سريعاً.

Multiple Libraries
Holding down the Option key “alt” when opening iPhoto will prompt if you want to make a new library. Very useful when you have family, friends and business photo libraries. Or if a library is getting to large, create a new one.

المجموعات المتعددة Multiple Libraries
اضغط بشكل ميواصل على زر alt  اثناء فتح iPhoto  سوف يظهر خيار اذا ما كنت ترغب فى الحصول على مجموعة جديدة. يعتبر الامر مفيداٌ اذا ما كان لديك مجموعة عائلية للصور وأخرى للاصدقاء و ثالثة للعمل.
