At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Qatar-based Qtel Group announced plans to co-found and establish a local office (chapter) of the MEF (Mobile Entertainment Forum). The MEF is an industry group that represents a variety of companies and organizations involved in the mobile entertainment “value chain” including operators, technology providers, content creators and more.
Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO of Qtel, said that “this is one of the initiatives that we see is going to be critical for our growth in the future.” He added “This center will enable us to transfer the knowledge that is going to be needed in our region to develop this content. We believe it is going to be critical because there is a lack of localized content in our region and it is important for us to start building that and we believe our partnership with MEF is going to help us a lot.”
The new chapter for the MEF in the Middle East will be located in the Qatar Science and Technology park in Doha, Qatar. Locating a new chapter there is arguably a sign that mobile entertainment in the Middle East has grown in significance and with Qtel’s assistance, the MEF and this new chapter, will work to continue to grow and promote the mobile entertainment industry, said Andrew Bud, Chairman of MEF. He added”Since the dawn of the age of mobile media in about 2000 when the Mobile Entertainment Forum was founded, it’s always been clear that the technology and the skills are global but the content must always be local and the challenge in every territory is to create an ecosystem of skilled partners working together to create value for all.”
