Mix like a DJ on your Mac with Djay

If you are a music fan (who isn’t?) you might have dreamed about mixing some tunes and added new grooves to your favorite tracks. Macs are famous for their music production tools and you don’t need to be a professional DJ to create cool stuff.
There are a lot of DJing and music production tools (GarageBand, Logic Studio, Reason, etc.), but for a hassle-free mixing experience, Djay can be your best friend. No matter if it’s your first time (like me) or you are a pro, you can make wonders with this nifty application.
Features
Djay loads your iTunes library in an easy to use environment featuring 2 turntables and lots of tools, so you can run a crazy party and make your friends really jealous.
It supports multi-touch touch-pads and you can also connect your external MIDI device to take your mixing power to the next level.
You can synchronize the BPM of 2 songs for a perfect transition. Add to that Auto-scratching that allows you to simulate a real scratch that sounds like a professional DJ work.
If you have a USB Mic, you can listen to the upcoming tracks and pre-cue them properly in the mix.
Drag any song from your iTunes library and drop it on one of the turntables and it will start playing. You can set a start point by moving the needle up and down.
Djay can also mix your entire library with automix feature applying DJ-style transitions. This is very good for parties where you don’t want to spend time behind the computer.
Another great feature of Djay is that you can record your mix and play it back again in your parties or mix it again with another track. You can also use real-time sampler to record sound clips and mix them into songs.
To make it a perfect set Djay features audio effects like Speed Change, Reverse Playback, Pitch-Shifting, Time-Stretching, Echo, Reverb, 3-Band Equalizer, Audio Units, and more.
Getting started
After downloading Djay from their website the DMG file should automatically mount or you need to do it manually by double-clicking its icon.
Simply drag djay icon and drop it on Applications folder. Then run it to begin the fun.
Drag a track or 2 from your iTunes library (right) to the turntables and play with different tools until you get a good grip of the environment. Don’t skip learning the keyboard shortcuts, because sometimes the mouse is just not enough to tweak the controls at the same time.
Spend an hour or 2 with Djay and you are ready to party.
Summary
For almost $50, you get a powerful application that is also careful using your system resources. It means you can run it on older Macs as long as you are running Mac OS Tiger or newer. You can have hours of fun in your parties with a minimal setup: a Mac laptop and a home theater system.
Well, if you want to play more seriously, check out Spin the all-in-one controller. Djay is also compatible with other MIDI controllers giving it even more flexibility for live sessions as well as music production.
Although Djay is a great piece of software, I wish it had some basic automation features to control the tools more freely.
