War Games retro style writing

wargamesAre you old enough to have seen the 1983 movie War Games? Even if you’ve missed that classic computer-hacking movie I’m sure you’ve seen the old style of computer screens where there was only text, no graphics, and the text was usually a certain green color on a black background. And typically, for some unknown reason, when the computer printed out something on the screen it had to sound like it actually printed it on a very loud dot matrix printer.

I write a lot in WriteRoom, partly because I can run it in full screen without any background. I typically set the text to a faint yellow and the background to black with Helvetica as the font. Now, thanks to Giles, I’ve found a solution for turning my Mac into a War Games style terminal.

You can get the font you need here. Download and install it and use it in your favorite app. For me, in WriteRoom, the screen looks likes kind of like what Matthew Broderick’s looked like in the movie.

Ironically, changing that screen to pretty much anything was considered a huge accomplishment at that time. Extra geek cred for this!
