Meeting with security expert Bruce Schneier

In a meeting yesterday at Al Qasr Hotel, Dubai, representatives of media met with Bruce Schneier, Chief Security Technology Officer of BT (British Telecom). He has been attending the Summit of the Global Agenda (see a picture here). Schneier said that one big topic in terms of the Internet and security, during the summit, had been cloud computing. He said that cloud computing is happening no matter if we hate it or not. “The economics are so powerful… that it’s going to happen,” he said.

When I asked if it matters anymore what operating system a user runs on their computer, Schneier revealed that his wife uses a Mac. Schneier said “Microsoft is the big target so the bad guys tend to target them because you get more bang for your buck by writing a Windows worm than an Apple worm. My wife uses a Macintosh and she laughs at all the security vulnerabilities because she doesn’t have any, she’s never had a virus. I don’t know if there is any Mac virus out there, it might not even exist.”

Look out for more from Schneier in a future issue of Shufflegazine and in our upcoming podcast.

You can follow Schneier’s blog for an up-to-date view of the state of security and his personal views on various topics.

  1. Cloud computing is going to revolutionize how we use our computers forever. No longer will we have to depend on certain operating system hurdles or even have monster rigs to support all the heavy program lifting. Server based applications always require very little to no resources on the clients part. Though security and backup is going to be an issue it’s not going to be that easy to sort out at least that is what I feel. Though I have heard of no upcoming projects from Apple’s side a lot has been happening on MS’s end though, with their idea of having all office based applications on the cloud, which is fantastic, Google already has us hooked with their Documents online, love to see where it all leads.
