The Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit (MacBU) announced today that in the next version of Office for Mac Entourage is being replaced by Outlook. The returning version of Outlook for Mac is built from the ground up using Cocoa, which should mean better integration with Mac OS X and an improved user experience. Microsoft also introduces a new database built for high-speed and Time Machine and Spotlight integration. Information Rights Management is also introduced in the upcoming Outlook, which, according to Microsoft “helps prevent sensitive information from being distributed to or read by people who do not have permission to access the content”.
There was no information available about when customers can expect the new version of Office including Outlook.
Microsoft used to make a version of Outlook for Mac but it was never on par with the Windows version in terms of functionality. After Office 98 Microsoft replaced Outlook with the then brand new Entourage application. For a while, they kept making an Outlook 2001 that ran only in Classic mode.
