Etisalat press release corrected, no movie rental and purchases in Middle East

Etisalat sent out a press release today about version 3.0 of the iPhone software now being available to their UAE customers. Overall it reveals nothing new about the iPhone software, but in the first version of the release, which is the one published by AMEInfo, it says:

The new software includes over 100 new features available to iPhone users including cut, copy and paste the texts; MMS; SMS forwarding, landscape view for Mail, Text and Notes; stereo Bluetooth, syncing Notes to the Mac and PC; shake to shuffle; movies and apps from the App Store; and automatic login at Wi-Fi hot spots and so many more features.

Notice it says “movies and apps from the App Store”?

After talking to a representative for Etisalat’s PR company it’s clear that this refers to the fact that the 3.0 upgrade supports movie purchases and rentals from iTunes, not that movies are now available in the iTunes stores in some Middle East countries. So even if it’s correct that the functionality is there in the 3.0 version that Etisalat customers can get, that doesn’t mean they can use it, unless they have an iTunes account in a supported country, like the US.

In a later version of the press release the reference to “movies” is removed.

Sorry to disappoint you, I was excited too for a second.
