My apple: My wish didn’t come true, Apple didn’t release a tablet (and post 1000)

Last week I wrote that my wish for WWDC was a tablet. I added that I thought it was unlikely my wish would come true and of course, as we now know, it didn’t.
What Apple did talk about at WWDC’s keynote on Monday night was new iPhone hardware and software. The new hardware, the iPhone 3G S, is to go on sale in US on June 19 and in the Middle East in August; the new version of the iPhone operating system, is to be released on June 17.
Of course I’m a bit disappointed in not getting a tablet but I hold on to the hope of one day Apple coming to its senses and giving me what I’ve been asking for, for years now.
In the mean time I guess I have to settle for iPhone 3.0 software, at least until iPhone 3G S makes it to the Middle East. We’re going to the US for a quick visit in early July so perhaps there’s a slight chance I can lay my hands on one then but I doubt it. Most of what Apple told us about the new software we knew since before. Among the main news we find:
- Copy/Paste.
- MMS.
- Full Arabic.
- Support for software talking to hardware accessories.
- Tethering.
- Find My iPhone through MobileMe web interface.
- Purchase and rent movies from iPhone.
- Peer to peer connections via Bluetooth for gaming and more.
- Spotlight search.
- Voicememo.
- Push notifications.
That’s quite a list for any update and we’ll have a lot to play with when we get the new software onto our iPhones. Some have said that WWDC was a disappointment but look at what we got: a date for the release of a brand new iPhone OS, a release date for a brand new iPhone, a release date for a brand new operating system, and the actual release of new notebooks. Those things individually would be impressive for any company and here we have relatively small Apple presenting it all together. Perhaps we’re a bit too used to Apple announcing amazing stuff and let’s be honest, it’s hard to top the original iPhone announcement, but we also need to keep it in perspective.
So to sum up, yes I wanted a tablet and I didn’t get one. I’m a bit disappointed about that but I’m also realistic. What Apple did announce was plenty amazing and should keep us all happy for a bit. What’s next from Apple do you think? New iPods perhaps (64GB iPod touch?), new iMac, or even something brand new.
Besides all the news from WWDC, this is post number 1000 on Shufflegazine.com I think that’s quite an accomplishment since September last year. Let’s hope we can keep that up in the future.
