Apple Releases iTunes 8.2, Breaks Jailbreaking

Apple released iTunes version 8.2 on Tuesday, in preparation for the upcoming release of iPhone OS 3.0, which is now supported in he new version of iTunes. The next generation of the iPhone operating system is expected to be released this month, possibly at next weeks WWDC event. Additionally the new version of iTunes contains various unspecified improvements and bug fixes.

This release of iTunes also breaks the ability to ‘jailbreak’ an iPhone or iPod touch to allow installation of unapproved iPhone apps, according to the “iPhone Dev-Team”, which oversees the development of such software tools. According to the team the blocking of the tools does not appear to be deliberate, just a matter of some changes in the USB protocol used to communicate with the devices that will need to be compensated for in the tools. The Dev-Team recommends delaying the update to iTunes 8.2 of one is interested in jailbreaking their device until after the tools have been updated. The only noticeable feature upgrade in the new iTunes version seems to be the Genius feature working for videos as well as music.

Also on Tuesday, Apple released QuickTime 7.6.2 which includes compatibility with iTunes 8.2 and some security improvements.

GarageBand received an update as well, with improvements to Artist lessons and access to Jam Packs in the loop browser.

All updates are available through Software Update. The updates to iTunes and QuickTime are available for Windows Vista/XP SP3 as well as Mac OS X.
