Sony Gulf FZE today launched their latest TV in the Middle East. The Sony BRAVIA WE5, labeled as the “first eco-friendly LCD TV”, has several features that together will help a household that watches about six hours of TV per day save around AED100 per year on their electricity bill, according to Sony. For a country the size of the UAE this would amount to about AED50 million saved over a year, the company stated.

Among the power-saving technologies in the WE5 we find a back light system (Micro-tubular Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp or HCFL) that reduces power-consumption of up to 50% compared to other LCD TV technologies, an “intelligent presence sensor” that can turn the TV to standby when it senses that no one is in the room watching TV, ambient light sensor that can automatically adjust the TV’s back light to fit the light available in the room, and a standby mode that cuts energy consumption to zero.

Priced at AED5999, the 40-inch WE5 is AED500 more expensive than the same model without the eco-friendly features. This is a premium that Sony Gulf says they think customers are willing to pay. Other sizes of the WE5 will be on offer in the future, Sony said.

According to Sony there are no new features in the WE5 that would pertain specifically to using it with a computer, like a Mac, or other computer-like device, like the Apple TV.
