Geeky Girl: Apple Deserves To Know How Bad It Is With iPhone And Etisalat

No I’m not talking about the plan, how little data there is, or how much we pay for the actual iPhone. Apple deserves to know how poor the service is from Etisalat so far.

We bought two iPhones in the iStyle Dubai Mall yesterday. As we’ve reported it took over two hours for us to get our iPhones. It seems the system was not in place to start processing the iPhone sales even though you would think Etisalat had enough time to get it right, seeing as they’ve said in the press that the deal was two years in the making.

geekygirlAnyway, the issue has since yesterday been that I have not had any data connection. Voice is fine, data is not. Since we’ve been busy I have not been able to call Etisalat until the evening. So just a while ago I placed a call to Etisalat’s customer service, selected iPhone in the menus and talked to this guy at Etisalat.

That’s when it started go south fast, so to speak.

They couldn’t help us, the Etisalat guy said, because the problem is with the SIM card not being activated. He could not help us because he was “iPhone Technical Support”. “Ok,” I said, “we have a problem with an iPhone”. “But that’s not our department,” he said. I tried to explain that as a customer I don’t care, that I have a problem with iPhone from Etisalat and that he was iPhone support and he should fix it.

The issue, it seems, was that although we bought the two iPhones at the same time in the same store Magnus’ iPhone was activated and everything and I was not. I can make and receive calls but not data apparently. How that makes any sense I don’t know and the Etisalat guy could not explain it.

The service in the store when we bought the phones was just about the worse I’ve seen in Dubai. The experience tonight on the phone with Etisalat was also just about the poorest I’ve experienced.

That doesn’t bode well for Etisalat and it doesn’t bode well for the impression people are getting of Apple here.

Steve Jobs, are you listening? I bet you if you were in the store with us yesterday, trying to spend a lot of money on one of your iPhones you would have been very upset.

Yes I know Etisalat started selling only yesterday and I know we should probably give them some time to get things right but I’m not patient enough for that and I think Apple fans deserve better than they’re getting, especially after having had to wait for almost three years to get the iPhone.

So to the poor support let’s add two more things. There was, according to Etisalat, supposed to be a prepaid plan but now there is no sign of a prepaid plan. There was also, according to Etisalat, supposed to be Visual Voicemail, and now there is no sign of Visual Voicemail.

Last we heard from Etisalat iPhone support was that “they’re having problems” and that it may be up to 24 hours before my problem is solved. So basically they are charging for perhaps two days of data service, which I won’t be able to use. Yes, that’s fair, isn’t it? How about we don’t pay our bills if we feel you don’t provide us our service? I will write more about the iPhone for Geeky Girl when I am able to use the iPhone as it is meant to be used.

Steve Jobs, as I said, you would not be happy. Please come see for yourself.

Update Feb 25: Was just on the phone again with Etisalat iPhone support. It’s been busy at work so I have not had chance to call until now. The guy told me that the SIM is still not activated and that he could find no complaint file in the system for my number. Amazing! When I spent so much time on the phone with them the other night they didn’t file a complaint. That’s horrible, horrible how they treat a customer who has spent lots of money with them and complained. They didn’t even care enough about me as a customer to put in a complaint. They just let it be and let me keep on paying for a service they knew full and well was not working. So now apparently they have a complaint and I have a complaint reference. Let’s see what happens.

Update Feb 26: Apparently things are not much better in Saudi Arabia where Mobily, partly owned by Etisalat, is selling iPhone.

  • Magnus,

I found this interesting piece of information in their iPhone FAQ over here -

What will happen after the end of iPhone 12 month contract?

After end of 12 months, package will not be valid & customer will not be committed to pay his package monthly rental, in the same time customer will not be granted the free SMS, Voice minutes & data usage.

I don't believe all this... what pricing do I revert to in 12 months time? Am I missing something?
  • I was told that after the 12 months are up you can chose to continue on an iPhone plan or roll your own plan if you so desire.
  • First Steve Jobs is on leave till June, he's unwell and I hope he gets better and sees us buying ten more generations of the iPhone. Second, Etisalat have rushed into all this and made a real mess of everyone's experience. Third, the data idea would have been understood if they pondered over the fact that the iPhone is not any other smart phone but a true Internet device.

I'm sure they're going to revise the data plans in time, has the local press picked any of this so far? Anyone?

I agree with Kareem. I had waited to see what Etisalat would offer as my work place have been insisting that I use their blackberry.

I thought f the iPhone was priced comparably, and the plans were about the same, I could con my work into giving me an iPhone instead of a blackberry.

No way in **** will they go for this. Im not going for this. Very disappointed.

I have sent tips for this article to Gizmodo, Engadget Mobile and Daily Mobile.

Hopefully, they will publish this very soon.
  • Thanks Imtiaz. I also emailed some questions to all of Apple's iPhone Press contacts. Not that I really expect any answer but at least they know about the issues.
  • My experience with the iPhone is somewhat similar with Crystal's. Choosing the 1st plan (AED199), linked to my old number.

The voice plan is activated, but not the data plan. My bad luck is, that asking to have the services linked to my old number I have the default 3G already activated (Pay as you use / 3G PAYG) which translates in charges of AED20/MB. And guess what? I am charged for data usage.

It is disappointing, because initially I've been under a good impression about Etisalat stuff. Indeed they are well trained - in selling, but not so well in offering support.

And by the way, talking of support, like Crystal, only today I could get a complaint number, after wasting hours on phone. Trying to debug the things myself, I have asked 101 stuff (support centre) to deactivate / cancel / un-subscribe from my present 3G PAYG service, as I don't want to be charged - I have used all these terms (deactivate, cancel, un-subscribe) and I have been told to call 125 for 3G services.

I did, but that is the number for ... ACTIVATION.

Thank you for the patience of reading such a long reply. And I don't no what to say, to be sad or glad, that I am not alone with exactly the same issues with Etisalat and iPhone.

From the moment I saw the article about the pay structure, I knew this was a sour deal.

First the charge for the iphone itself is way too high. 200 to 500 more than the grey market value.
    Second no unlimited data plan.

currently I own a BB with worldwide unlimited data for 295/month!!!
If I factor in voice and sms, I average about 450-500/month in total phone cost.

With that said I don't see any appeal to switch to an iPhone, and put so many limitations on myself!

Quite sad as i believe the iPhone is a beautiful piece of technology!!!

    Ok,

My phone was just replaced by Etisalat. I went to the service center and demanded that they replace it or just take it back cause this is not a service to be provided by such a company. They just gave me another device, but told me to keep the box.

    Well,
I am tired of my phone too.
I bought the iphone with the least expensive plan (Plan 1) and told them not to open it cause I will activate it at home.
I reached home and found out that my phone had a protruding rubber piece from the frame close to the home button. Took it the next day to the sales center from which I brought it and they told me to call 101 who will HELP. Yeah RIGHT!
I complained and called them twice but they said that "Someone will call back in 30 mintues!" It has been 24 hours now and the service center is busy and not answering since the morning.
I am going to them one last time, if nothing happens, I will return it and buy a GREY market phone. To hell with warranty if it is this bad!

Actually i dont totally agree with you. I know its a disappointment not to be able to play with your device immediately.
But lets face it, even Apple itself had very much problems and server drops at launching the iPhone, the first and the second generations.

In the US people were not able to activate their devices for hours. In Japan it took more than 24 hour.

You have the right to blame Etisalat, but launching something big and much anticipated is difficult for any company. Even Apple itself (twice).

You can be happy you are not the only one, check this:
"...had to call Apple; I was transferred to Apple iPhone tech support. After explaining the problem, the Apple tech support person asked me to wait while he read some documentation and..."

  • Hello Medopal,

It did not surprise me to have problems with my iPhone, but want really upset me was the way it was handled. They told me last night that I would have data working by 8am this morning, but for most of the day I did not have Wifi, data, or any service. It was only this evening that voice service and Wifi started to work again, but I still do not have data. So tomorrow will be three days with out any data, that I am paying for. Most companies will have problems when they launch things does have but with this it seems to be one problem after another, so here is to hoping that I will one day be able to use my data plan. :-| I also wonder now many iPhones they have really sold?
  • Dugg too.

Personally I wish Apple would open a store here. The resellers are not at all competent in my opinion and I recently carried 3 laptops to London and had repairs done via the Genius bar...proper Apple stores are as different to the stores we have here as proper coffee is to Starbucks!!! ;)
I don't know why Apple haven't opened but I continue hoping they will and meanwhile I buy my Apple products from Apple stores overseas when I travel.

Good luck with the iphone...I find the Blackberry a much better phone despite being a loyal Apple user in most things.
