Just Bought iPhone From iStyle Dubai Mall (Updated)

photo1This morning at 9am, all iStyle stores across the UAE started selling Apple iPhone 3G from Etisalat. Important to point out though it’s all Etisalat doing it in iStyle stores, iStyle themselves seem to have nothing to do with the iPhone selling and processing. Although we have no official confirmation to this it seems to have been a very last minute decision, possibly pushed by Apple, as previously Etisalat had only said the iPhone would initially be sold in their own stores and business centers. Even the press release from yesterday did not mention iStyle.

And since Etisalat has been very silent on the matter, in fact, they couldn’t have been much more silent, we’ve not learned much about what’s been going on ever since the February 2nd ad in the papers saying that it was coming this month. In fact, people in the business have told us that Etisalat’s handling of the iPhone launch has been a “disaster” and that “they have no clue what they’re doing”. From our experience in the store that certainly seems to be the case.

We were among the first customers at iStyle to pick up Etisalat iPhones. As I mentioned, Etisalat has placed staff in iStyle stores to process the iPhone orders. At 10:00 sharp we entered the iStyle store at The Dubail Mall and one thing we quickly discovered was that there was no use trying to buy an iPhone with a credit card or any other card because Etisalat didn’t have the machine there for that and they said they couldn’t use iStyle’s system.

photo2All in all it took us over two hours to get processed and out the door with no other customers waiting in line. One problem was that we sign up for new connections so they need passport copy. Luckily I had a digital copy in my Mac and the iStyle guys were nice enough to print it for me. We sure hope they sort out this processing, otherwise it’ll be a monumental disaster. But the passport issue was just a delay of a few minutes so a very small problem in the big picture.

Another thing we found out is that Etisalat has placed a PC (!) in the iStyle store just to deal with the iPhone orders. I guess they didn’t bring a keyboard and mouse because they were using an Apple keyboard and Mighty Mouse.

Basically the Etisalat guys told us again and again, “just a few minutes”, and they were constantly on the phone I guess checking on things. One interesting thing was that they said that in training they had been told that the system for Visual Voicemail was put in place but according to Apple there is no Visual Voicemail for Etisalat.

Yesterday Etisalat told us the details of the iPhone plans, but they left out a number of questions and we were today eager to try to get answers. We tried already yesterday to get answers directly from Etisalat as well as from their PR agency but no one knew the answers or would give them to us.

  • Unlocked or locked? On Apple’s site it says unlocked which the Etisalat guys in the store confirmed. They are unlocked.
  • Arabic? It’s “coming soon” as a software update but they cannot say when.
  • No prepaid: Even though Etisalat previously said there would be prepaid option, the guys in the store said no prepaid and they don’t know of any plans for prepaid in the future. That means you cannot just buy an iPhone and walk out with it without also signing up for a contract. Update: Prepaid is coming in “near future” according to Etisalat PR.
  • Extra data? Charged at 2fils/kb. The guys in the store said you could sign up for an extra data plan to cover that additional data, which doesn’t make sense.
  • Extra voice minutes, SMS? Charged at normal rates.
  • After a contract runs out, then what? You’re then free to decide what to do with the iPhone and the connection.
  • Can you get out of the contract early? Yes, on Plan 1 you pay AED300 cancellation charge, on the other plans you pay the full price of whatever is left up to 12 months.
  • Update: Etisalat has now stated that you can only get an iPhone contract if you buy an iPhone from Etisalat. This goes against what they seemingly said before that existing iPhone-owners could get contracts.

I’m sure the coming days, weeks, and months will reveal many interesting facts about Etisalat and the iPhone.

More updates coming later.

Do you guys think that Jailbreaking it is reversible? would you do it?
in other words; is it the apps you're after or the basic stuff?
  • Jailbreaking is reversible.
  • After spending quite some time thinking about things, the iPhone, Etisalat and the mess they are in with all of us not having the chance to get our iPhones either easily or with great data plans, I believe the whole situation happened due to lack of understanding of what really an Apple iPhone is ... right guys?

If it were me and if I wanted to make a name from all of this and make the smoothest best launch of the iPhone 3G globally and stun other countries who did poor launches, I would understand that there's only one Apple iPhone 3G and it would do well with just one major data plan.

If I own any other device or even the unlocked iPhone 2G/3G device, I can convert my Wasel connection to post paid, sign Etisalat's Unlimited Broadband package at AED. 460/- a month and know at the back of my mind that anything beyond 10GB of data is going to become a big menace on my bill.

Looking from a pricing perspective, Etisalat are willing to let a 3G customer use 10GB of data at AED. 460/- per month. This is given and they don't mind signing as many contracts as would come their way.

To make everyone win, Etisalat should have looked at what they were willing to offer on the iPhone plan in terms of free minutes and sms and dropped the whole idea by not offering any talk time or text credits. This would have allowed them to considerably reduce their cost (though they may have a good profit margin here and do have) on the AED. 460/- for 10GB and reinvest this into a better price for the 'one' iPhone 3G package that they'd want to sell and we'd want to buy - at any cost!

So, my package for the Etisalat Apple iPhone 3G would have been as follows:

Apple iPhone 3G 8GB: AED. 2,599/- for the device
Etisalat iPhone 3G 10Gb Data Plan: AED. 349 per month
Excess usage over 10GB: AED. 5 dirhams per 500Mb

Apple iPhone 3G 16GB: AED. 2,999/- for the device
Etisalat iPhone 3G 20Gb Data Plan: AED. 599 per month
Excess usage over 20GB: AED. 9 dirhams per 1Gb

Installment plans would be three and for 1 and 2 years preferably with higher prices on the device. Current iPhone 3G users would be able to sign up for any data plan regardless of whether they have an 8GB or 16GB iPhone. 2G users would be able to use the EDGE network for the same rates.

Has this put a smile on your face? :)?

I LOVE YOU MAN! You are 100% correct. There is no pan, Im just being charged EXACTLY how Etisalat always charges me! Thats of course assuming I buy the iPhone. Which I doubt I will.

Then again, with how you oepened up my eyes, an iPhone for FREE isnt half bad!
  • cylvar
    Ok. here's the deal...
been a proud iphone user since the dawn of iphone; I carry one in my pocket all the time; and a cracked one for the car

    I still want to go ligit and get the boons of etisalat's iphone; and yes; data is the word of the century here; Etisalat has the nasty habit of keeping you on your toes when it comes to overspending quota;

upon asking the etisalat rep. yesterday; he told me that an extra MB will cost me AED 2/- I kicked and screamed; i cursed at the data gods and swore not to purchase the iphone "that day"

the thing is; I cant seem to clock my usage to fit 1gb or 2gb of data no matter what

on the other hand; the grey market is reducing prices; i got offered a 16gb yesterday for 2480!

and what about the data rollover? question begs to be answered; no answer from etisalat yet; the rep told me to check in a couple of weeks once the plans matured; but no optimism from my side

    you need data for:

    -Emals
    -Surfing
    -VOIP
    -Chatting
    -AGPS
    -WIKIS
    -Social Networking
    -syncing
    ETC...

    IT IS RATHER FRUSTRATING

    just my 2 cents

  • Appleholic
ooooo My God... so 2Gb extra will cost u a wopping 10,000 Dhs... that makes no sence at Allllllllllllllllll..... God bless Wi-fI... SO THIS MEANS... Switch off ur 3G connection and connect to Wi-Fi every time u want to check something...

i am going to see how much it costs to get the 10GB plan with that...
  • rashid
i have asked the employ in etisalat

about how much it will cost if i finished th 2 gb

he said for 1 mb = dh 5
  • Appleholic
    ONE Word... GREADY....
  • dg
So why is etisalat hiking prices here in its home market?
  • dg
    Hi..
If you go to the Mobily site (Etisalat unit that launched iPhone in Saudi Arabia), you will see that the tariffs are much more reasonable there.

The plans are better and they have prepaid bundles also. You can trim almost Dh600 on the handset itself and Dh100 on the plan...
  • Appleholic
hahahhaha... oooppppsss my bad... okay i am confused now...

so the minutes and sms calculations is correct... so we still have 400dhs and i am sure that 400dhs goes towards the data package... noooow... if 400dhs can get u 2GB of data on the iPhone, and didnt Etisalat state in there plan thats it 2 fils per Kb?!?!?!?! if so then after ur 2GB is done we are pretty much going apple for bank rupcy :P !!!!!!! 20 Dhs per Mb... is crazy...
  • Rashid
    Thanks appleholic

But I have to clarify something about the calculation u did about the plan

If you said that they charge u 2fils/kb

That means you have saved a hell of money!

    I'll explain

    U know that 1 mb= 1000kb
And as u stated in your comment for each kb they charge 2fils it'll come

    Dh 20 / mb

And in the plan they give you 2000 mb!

    Every month!

    That's total 24000 mb for 1 year !!!!!

    24000 mb * dh 20 = dh 480000 !!!!!!!!

    That's insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And u just pay total dh 8091 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Plus the 6000 min the whole contract

    And 3600 sms

I see it very very very very very very very very very very very very good deal

    I'll go for it
  • Ankur Rajpara
Also - I spent almost 2.5 hrs at the Etisalat branch at Al Khaleej today and walked out empty handed. Said they were having a system problem processing my application since I was a new Etisalat customer (currently w/ Du for everything else) and that I should come back tomorrow.

Etisalat, thanks for a great afternoon.
  • Ankur Rajpara
"lets take Plan 4 for example…
    500 min free… that 150 Dhs
    300 sms free… thats 90 Dhs
    and 2000mb if 2files/Kb is 400 Dhs
    thats… 640 Dhs…. get my drift?"

Am I missing something in the above math?
    1MB = 1024KB, therefore
    2000(MB) X 1024(KB) X .02(AED) = 40,960 AED!!!
  • Ah! We needed some maths in to this and we have it. So this means that we get the 8GB for free and the 16GB for just AED. 375 to start with. This means the fourth plan is overall a good one and I think it won't hurt to buy this plan and then use all your minutes, smses and the data. 2GB would be worthwhile for most of us... may be.

    Ideas?
  • Appleholic
After reading all ur comments and experiences, i think i am so convinced now that the plan is so not worth it.. such a rip off... i do agree, they should have at least offered an Unlimited Plan....

    But....

Guys, my friends and i at work have just calculated the plans Etisalat is offering for the iPhone3G... And we came up with a conclution... if u do the calculations.. the Plan is just an advanced payment of the certain amount of minutes and sms and data plan they offer u...

let me elaberate on this a bit more...

lets take Plan 4 for example...
500 min free... that 150 Dhs
300 sms free... thats 90 Dhs
    and 2000mb if 2files/Kb is 400 Dhs
thats... 640 Dhs.... get my drift?

so what i am trying to say here is... there is no Plan...
they are just making u pay in advanced... its the same plan as before..
when people were using the iPhone before the Official release, they were charged by the Etisalat per Kb for data and the rates of the Phone calls and SMS was as per usage... its the same thing here... the only good news is the iPhone3G is 340something with Plan 4 if u get the 16GB...

    New info...

Etisalat is offering Rollover Minutes for a max period of 2 months...

which means... lets say u used up... 300min the first month... the 200 min left will be shifted to next month, which means the moth after that u have 700min free... but on the second month u have to finish ur 700min or else whats left from minutes by the 3rd month will be lost.....
  • Appleholic
Rashid, The answer to ur question is yes... in US they offer Unlimited Data Plan... cause i have 2 iPhone 3G's over there, and trust me there plan is amazing, but there connection is the worst in the world... u get droped calls "hangs up in ur face" ever minute.. litraly every minute... and u get charged on everything, a missed call to the UAE can reach $11... can u believe that... but they do have Unlimited DATA and Unlimited SMS ;)
  • My frustration has taken over and I can't use a phone with limited data. Unless an unlimited iPhone 3G is offered with better data packages, I won't buy it. Etisalat don't get the damn thing, we don't need the phone, we need better data packages to use it. Hell on the other hand I see Blackberry users taunting us and waving their Unlimited package in our face... this is a nightmare.
  • Rashid
I wish the plan was with unlimeted usage of data

How is the plan in the us?

Do they have unlimted usage of data?
  • Hassnain
@Magnus: I can confirm what Yasser said. I called 101 as well. They will not sell you the plan only.
  • ZxB
I really need a prepaid plan... {I'm a student}.. I would love to keep the same plan (Voice is charged, texts are gonna be charged, 25AED 2MB).. but etisalat is also going to take advantage of this monopoly and not respond to the needs of the customers..... This sucks!.. I love the phone its something ive been looking forward to.. but not the Frickin' prices.. ETISALAT = BIG FAT RIP OFF..
  • ultrablue
Extra voice minutes, SMS? Charged at normal rates.

Thats all I needed to know! Well, almost, how does it work with your email(s)?
  • Emails is data so that counts to the data quota.
  • Felonios Monk
And so you guys allege to be Mac fans?
Etisalat brings you a legitimate iPhone and you bastards ... and moan like your having a bad period!

Do you think Etisalat is free to set tariff plans? Hell no, the TRA approves plans.

Seems to me like you guys are Apple possers. Go back to your Acers and please, don't spoil our reputation by purchasing an iPhone. Stick with Nokia kids- now that's more your style.

Stick a fork in your ...- you are done!
  • That would be additional AED. 240/- per year and not per month for line rent. Please correct. Thanks! :)
  • Some more details, a call to 101 says you can't buy the plan alone, the phone and the plan go together. I suspect that if you buy the phone and the data plan, they'd bill you the first month rental fee as well and then you'd be able to cancel. I've not confirmed this though.

@fangpyre: Hmm, yes, if you see their pamphlets they are rubbish and that table that they're using with 8Gb and 16 Gb could go on just one table to make the comparison easier. The monthly charges are just the same. So a lack of creativity when it comes to playing with numbers when you price your product.

Overall, this could end up being one bad deal since the iPhone is an Internet hungry device and it may go over quota and then we'll all have hickups looking at our inflated bills. If that happens you can think of what you'd have to do... cancel the subscription and pay even more? Keep the service and block the Internet (like I do on my current 2G)? Kill yourself?

Another dimension is the launch of the next iPhone this June and that might be worth a wait.

Lastly, let's see what Etisalat have delivered (based on what was expected):

    1. Great pricing? No.
    2. Great data plans? No.
    3. Ease of use for pre-paid users? No, that means to keep your current phone you've got to budget AED. 240/- additionally for line rent per month, per phone!
    4. Data plan for current iPhone users? So far 'No' but like Magnus says this might happen, though I got a response in the negative.
    5. Hint if a 2G iPhone user can use the data plans (if point 4 is true)? No, and I think that won't happen.
    6. News if iTunes UAE store is now available? Not sure, but this may happen? Can we use our local credit cards to buy? What prices would we be paying?
    7. Is GPS included in the iPhone that was launched? Which service?

Whew,... I'm tired now, guys like us need freedom. I'd love to still buy an unlocked iPhone 3G and get the Unlimited data plan. That way I'll be saving a lot of money. Really, who needs the hassle?
  • Aftab Sayed
Hi there update i was at etisalat early this morning and i was told that the only way to avail of the voice/sms/data plan is to but the unit from etisalt and if you have an existing phone you can use the data packages on offer.

I hope this is not the case and the the person at the etisalat desk is misguided cos the data plan rates are crazy.

    a.
  • They told us in the store, and they've said it in the press, that existing iPhone users can sign up for the plan and keep using their iPhones
  • fangpyre
    Medopal,
They are saying you pay 300 if you cancel Plan 1, which you pay 3,090 for.
So you will get the phone for a whopping 3,390!!

So what is the price of the phone that the will calculate the cancelation against? Or are they just going to make me pay the entire fees for the rest of the year in one shot?

    Yasser,
    Great review.
But I beg to differ on one thing.
It is not great that they rushed to get this.
I don't see how the marketing team was involved in the rush.
And a simple poster with the iPhone and "now here" would have sufficed.

    Magnus,
So what will I be charged when the plan is over?
What will I be charged if I use my own phone?
Why did you opt to buy a new phone?
  • > So what will I be charged when the plan is over?

Whatever you chose to continue with. After your 12 months are up you can chose to do whatever; Make your own package or continue on one of the iPhone packages.

    > What will I be charged if I use my own phone?

The charge for whatever plan you pick, I guess.

    > Why did you opt to buy a new phone?

Partly so I could go through the experience and write about it to the benefit of everyone; partly because it is the official iPhone here.
  • Jeetu
If you already have an iPhone, will they let you suscribe to the plans they are offering?
  • Yes you can get the plans without getting an iPhone, but not the other way around.
  • medopal
sorry it seems like a mess.

anyways, according to the cancellation thing. If i got an iPhone from etisalat for 2600 + 300 (cancellation) i will running happily with an unlocked phone.

its around 2700 in the market (without support) so that could be something
  • I just got back from Etisalat's head office in Sharjah and it wasn't for sale as yet. They said there's a systems issue and I had to wait for an hour so that their sales could start. To change my phone from Wasel to post-paid I'd have to wait two hours which is alright with me since this is the usual time it takes. Also, a form has to be filled out for this and the GSM post-paid package has a AED. 20 rental fee per month.

You have to produce your passport copy and salary certificate (HUH?? HAHA!) to get the phone and if you're in business you'll have to produce your passport copy and trade license copy (easy! lucky!). Arrange this and you have to fill out an application.

I talked to the a local guy there and he looked very well informed, so I told him to keep two sets for me (since he was taking orders and said I'll ring you tomorrow). The iPhone will be handed over to you by hand even if you have opted for the installment plan. Also, you get a free post-paid sim and don't have to sign up for a new one (if in case you don't want to change over your Wasel).

In summary, the guys had all the information you need to get started but there are a few issues that they will resolve in around a week's time. I didn't see any in-store adverts anywhere in the main hall or on the first floor, so that means Etisalat rushed to get the phone to us (which is good) and they thought they'd get the other stuff ready later.

Overall I am depressed having looked at the data plans since I would have wanted more and why not? One more thing, there are people arriving and placing orders, like 3 pieces for the 16GB was one... it makes you want to buy seeing all this around you, but with less data to use and the silly price of Fils. 2/kb, I'm not sure if I can free my mind and use the thing that much.

Do I buy? Two booked so far, so yes! Crazy? Yes... a bit.
  • Holy cow, what a mess. If not surprising.
