Apple introduced iWork ‘09 at Macworld Expo in January and although the ‘08 version was a tough act to follow they’ve done a good job with upgrading the suite. In brief, iWork ‘09 offers more functionality than the preceding version at the same price; it’s a must-have software for pretty much all Mac users. A shorter version of this review appears in the February 2009 issue of Shufflegazine.

Pages ‘09

When you first start up Pages ‘09 you will discover that the new version includes more templates, and very nice looking ones too. Indeed that’s true for all three applications in the suite, Apple has added more templates throughout, which will make you look good with the documents you crate. In Pages there are 40 new templates in addition to the 140 existing ones. You will also discover that the Template Chooser has been redesigned a bit with added functionality for quick access to Recent and Existing files.

Personally I like that Apple has included a full screen mode in Pages ‘09 as I am a big fan of “distraction-free writing” and I write a lot in WriteRoom. Perhaps Pages can for me now be a more serious authoring tool. In full screen mode all you see is the document, live word count on the bottom left, and page number on the bottom right. If you move the mouse to the top of the screen the menu and toolbars appear. Speaking of the word count, it is also new in Pages ‘09. In previous versions Pages you could mail-merge only with Apple’s Address Book, which was very limiting. If you have a lot of contacts you want to send letters to it’s much easier to keep them in a spreadsheet. So users, like myself, stuck with Word and Excel for such matters. But no more do we need to. In the ‘09 suite Pages can mail-merge with Numbers, a much welcome addition and it works very well. For more academic users, Pages now finally supports MathType equations and EndNote references. I know many people who will rejoice at this news although they are a small minority of all Pages users; it’s welcome news nonetheless. Finally I want to mention the new outline functionality. Working in outline mode is a great way to quickly work on the structure of a document. You go between outline view and full view with one click and updates you do in one view are instantly reflected in the other. Fans of dedicated outline applications like OmniOutliner will probably want to stick to those applications, but for mere outline-mortals, Pages is great.

KeyNote ‘09

Perhaps the biggest news with Keynote ‘09 is not to be found on the Mac but on the iPhone and iPod touch. With the ‘09 suite Apple released a new iPhone application available in the iTunes App Store for $0.99. The new application talks to Keynote over Wi-Fi and you can see the slides on the iPhone screen. In landscape mode you see the current and next slide and in portrait mode you see the current slide and the slide notes. Advancing slides is as easy as, you guessed it, swiping with your finger on the iPhone screen. This is very cool indeed. Being a big fan of OmniGraffle I like Apple’s new Ruler Preferences. Under “Object Spacing & Sizing” you can select to “Show relative spacing” and “Show relative sizing” in very much the same way as OmniGraffle. This is very cool, Apple, thank you. Apple decided to drop export to Flash in Keynote ‘09, something I don’t like. As a backup before doing presentations I always exported to Flash, PDF, and QuickTime so I always had a choice if there was no KeyNote application to use. To me, the Flash export worked well and I think Apple should have kept it. Admittedly for most users it’s a small and perhaps even insignificant thing. The Presenter Display has received a minor update. Move your mouse to the top of the screen and a small toolbar appears with thumbnails of your slides. Click on a thumbnail and you go straight to that slide. No need to go out of Presentation view anymore, which is very helpful. The main news in KeyNote ‘09 however must be the new and improved animations and transitions. With Magic Move you can create animations in and between slides. For example, say you have your portrait on the title slide of a presentation and you want it to move off to a corner and become smaller on the following slide. You place it on the first slide, duplicate the slide, move and resize the portrait on the second slide, and apply Magic Move on the logo in the first slide. For those who present a lot of graphs, charts and other numeric information you’ll be pleased to see the much-improved support in KeyNote ‘09. There are new types of charts, improved support for tables where you can enter and display information, and much more.

Numbers ‘09

Numbers is the often-overlooked sibling in the iWork suite, with Pages and, in particular, KeyNote taking most of the limelight. And perhaps that’s natural as it was the application last added to the suite in 2007. For most users’ needs, Numbers is a user-friendly spreadsheet application that makes documents look good. That certainly hasn’t changed in the ‘09 version. Rather, Apple has made creating great looking spreadsheets with more advanced functionality easier than ever before. If you keep in mind that Numbers ‘09 is really only version 2.0 of the software, you’ll be even more impressed with what Apple has accomplished in a short period of time. The Template Chooser and it’s improved functionality of Recent and Existing documents is the same in Numbers as it is in the two other applications in the suite. Also as with the other applications there are now more, great looking templates to chose from. I’m not sure most users ever need to enter formulas in cells in Numbers but I know many do. They will welcome the improved formula creation tool in Numbers ‘09. Before when you inserted a function, for example “=STDEV(number, [number,...])”, you had to select each word, like “number”, and click on a cell or type in a value or cell reference. This was cumbersome at best. In ‘09 a small but significant chance is that you can now with one click on a word, like “number”, select it and then click on a cell or type something in. No longer do you have to select the word or words, then enter what’s replacing it. This makes working with functions and formulas much more streamlined. In all there are now over 250 functions to chose from in Numbers ‘09. In terms of graphs and charts there is also tighter integration between the apps in the iWork suite so that you can enter values in a table in Numbers, have it generate a chart, and display that chart on a page in Pages. Change the values in the table in Numbers and with one click you can update the chart in Pages. This has been possible for a long time in Microsoft’s Office suite and has now arrived in iWork. Finally, in terms of organizing information in tables there is improved support. You can now designate a number of rows with a certain name and group them together like a section and each section has a summary row. This makes it much easier to display large and complicated data sets in a visually-pleasing way that is easy to overview. It’s not quite Pivot tables but it mimics the usual Pivot table functionality in what Apple calls Table Categories. There are also new chart-types to chose from, with the most interesting news being the mixed chart format and the two-axis chart. With the mixed chart format you can overlay one set of data on another set in the same graph, highlighting differences or similarities; with the two-axis chart you can plot data with separate units or scales in the same chart, allowing for much more dynamic modes of presentation of numeric data. It’s also worth mentioning that with the ‘09 version of Numbers Apple has added AppleScript support much to the cheers of many advanced spreadsheet users.

iWork.com

With the new iWork suite Apple also introduced a new online collaboration web site, iWork.com. From any iWork ‘09 application users can with one click upload documents to the web site and make them available for others. Other users can, with a web browser (any browser will work, not just Safari) view the document and attach comments. Documents are also available for download as PDF files for users who don’t have iWork as well as in their original iWork formats. IWork.com is currently in a free beta testing phase; Apple said it would be a paid service in the future.

عرض “آي ورك ٠٩”

قدمت أبل باقة “آي ورك ٠٩” فى معرض ماك ورلد الذى عقد فى شهر يناير، على الرغم من نسخة ٠٨ كان قوية الا ان التحديث الذى حدث للباقة الجديدة كان عمل رائع. ايجازاً يمكن القول أن “آي ورك ٠٩” تقدم وظائف اكثر من النسخة السابقة بنفس السعر، انها برنامج لا يمكن الاستغناء عنه بالنسبة لكل مستخدمى ماك. نسخة مختصرة من هذا العرض سوف تظهر على صفحات شفل جازين فى عدد فبراير.

بيجز ٠٩

بمجرد ان تبدأ فى تشغيل “بيجز” ستدرك من اللحظة الاولى ان النسخة الجديدة بها لوحات اكثر و ذات مظهر انيق، فى الحقيقة لقد حدث نفس الامر لبرامج الباقة الثلاثة إذ اضافت أبل لوحات جديدة.

فى “بيجز” هناك ٤٠ لوحة جديدة بالاضافة الى ١٤٠ لوحة موجودين اصلاً. سوف تكتشف ان “Template Chooser” اعيد تصميمة قليلاً و تم اضافة وظيفة جديدة له للوصول الى  ”الملفات الحديثة” و ” والملفات الموجودة”.

بشكل شخصى اعجبنى اضافة أبل لخاصية الشاشة الكاملة فى “بيجز ٠٩” اذ اننى من محبى الكتابة و اكتب كثيراً مستخدماً “WriteRoom” و ربما سيكون”بيجز” اداة كتابه فعالة. عند تفعيل الشاشة الكاملة كل ما تراة هو الوثيقة و عداد الكلمات و هو خاصية جديدة في البرنامج و يظهر فى اسفل اليسار و رقم الصفحة فى اسفل اليمين. اذا حركت الفارة نحو اعلى الشاشة القائمة و شريط الادوات سوف يظهرا. فى النسخة السابقة من “بيجز” كان الاندماج محدود ولا يحدث الا مع برنامج “ادرس بوك”. اذا كان لديك العديد من جهات الاتصال التى تريد ان ترسل اليها خطابات يمكنك ذلك بسهولة بالاحتفاظ بهم جميعاً فى وثيقة واحدة spreadsheet. المستخدمين مثلى الذين يعلقون بين ورد و اكسل عند التعامل مع مثل هذه الامور سيستريحوا من هذا التعب. فى الباقة الجديدة “بيجز” يمكن دمجة مع “نيمبرز” و هذه الاضافة جيدة جداً و تعمل بشكل ممتاز. اما بالنسبة للمستخدمين الاكاديميين المعادلات الرياضية و مراجع “اندنوت”. اعرف الكثير من الاشخاص الذين سيسرون لسماع هذه الاخبار على الرغم من انهم يمثلون اقلية ضمن مستخدمى “بيجز”. اخيراً اريد ان اذكر الوظيفة التى تعمل من خلال الانترنت و هى فعالة اذا كنت تريد العمل على بناء الوثيقة.

“كي نوت”

الاخبار الرئيسية عن “كي نوت ٠٩” لم ترتبط بماك بل ارتبطت بآيفون و آيبود تاتش. احتوت الباقة الجديدة برنامج جديد للآيفون متوفر فى متجر “آي تيونز” يباغ ثمنه ٩٩. سنت، البرنامج الجديد يتصل ب”كي نوت” من خلال “واي فاي” و تستطيع ان ترى العروض على شاشة آيفون و آيبود. فى الوضع العرضى ترى الشريحة الحالية و التالية اما فى الوضع الافقى ترى الشريحة الحالية بالاضافة إلى الملحوظات الخاصة بالشرائح. تحريك الشرائح فى غاية السهولة، تستطيع القيام بذلك بتمرير اصبعك عليها على شاشة الآيفون، مما يعد امر ممتع حقاً. لكونى من محبى ” اومني جرافل” اعجبت بالخيارات الجديدة التى للمسطرة Ruler Preferences. من خلال ” Object Spacing&Sizing” تستطيع الاختيار بين ” Show relative spacing” او ” Show relative sizing” تماماً كما فى “اومني جرافل” امر جميل حقاً، شكراً لأبل. قررت أبل ان لا تضع خاصية فى “Flash export” فى “كي نوت٠٩” و هو امر لا احبذة. قبل البدء فى عمل العروض اقوم بالدعم و ذلك  ”Flash export” و “PDF” و “QuickTime” حتى يكون لدى الاختيار فى حالة اذا ما لم يكن هناك برنامج “كي نوت” للإستخدام.

بالنسبة لي اعتقد ان ” Flash export”  كانت تعمل بشكل جيد و كان يجب على أبل الابقاء عليها، و كذلك باعترف شريحة كبيرة من المستخدمين بأن تلك الخاصية كانت هامة جداً. شاشة العرض لم تشهد تحديثاً كبير اذ انك عندما تحرك الفارة الى اعلى الشاشة يظهر شريط أدوات صغير به لمحة سريعة (thumbnails) عن الشريحة التى تستخدمها. عند الضغط على (thumbnail) سوف تذهب سريعاً الى هذه الشريحة و لا تحتاج إلى الخروج من رؤية العرض مما يعتبر امر مفيد للغاية. من الامور الجديدة فى برنامج “كي نوت٠٩”  التحسينات التى لحقت بالرسوم المتحركة و التحولات. باستخدام “Magic Move” تستطيع ابتكار رسوم متحركة فى الشرائح و بينها ايضاً.

هولاء اللذين يقدمون عروض بها الكثير من رسومات الجرافيك و الرسوم البيانية و المعلومات الرقمية الاخري سوف يسرون عندما يعلمون أن  بالتحسينات الكبيرة التى شهدها برنامج “كي نوت ٠٩” إذ أن هناك الآن انواع جديدة من الرسوم البيانية، و دعم أفضل للجداول التى تضع و تعرض فيها المعلومات و المزيد.

نمبرز “Numbers o9″

برنامج “نمبرز” هو الاخ الغير شقيق الذى لا يحظى بالاهتمام داخل باقة “آي ورك” إذ “بيجز” و تحديداً “كي نوت” يخطفا الاضواء منه، ربما يكون الامر طبيعياً حيث أن “نمبرز” آخر برنامج تمت اضافتة للباقة فى عام ٢٠٠٧. بالنسبة لاحتياجات معظم المستخدمين “نمبرز” برنامج سهل الاستخدام ليجعل الوثائق تبدو أفضل، الامر لم يتغير فى “آي ورك٠٩” بل على العكس جعلت أبل مسألة عمل وثائق جميلة المظهر باستخدام الوظائف المتاحة امر اسهل من ذى قبل. إذ ما وضعت فى الحسبان ان “نمبرز٠٩” هو النسخة ٢،٠ من اصدارات البرنامج سوف تندهش مما قامت به أبل فى هذا الوقت القصير. خاصية “Template Chooser-اختيار اللوحة” تم تحسينها و لاسيما بالوظيفة الجديدة ” Recent and Existing documents- الوثائق الحديثة و الموجودة” تعمل بنفس الطريقة فى “نمبرز” التى نعمل بها فى البرنامجين الآخرين فى الباقة. كما يستطيع مستخدمى البرامج الآخرى الاختيار بين الكثير من اللوحات التي تبدو بشكل جميل فإن مستخدمى “نمبرز” سوف يرحبون بخاصية انشاء الصيغ المحسنة. قبل ذلك عندما كان المستخدم يضع وظيفة كان عليه اختيار كل كلمه مثل “نمبرز” ثم الضغط على خلية او كتابة قيمة او مرجع الخلية مما كان يشكل صعوبة. اما فى النسخة ٠٩ هناك فتستطيع أن بضغطة واحدة على كلمة مثل “نمبرز” ان تختارها ثم تضغط على خلية او تكتب شيء بداخلها و لم تعد تحتاج ان تختار كل كلمة على حده ثم تضع ما يقابلها. هذا الامر يضع العمل مع الوظائف و الصيغ سلس. اجمالاً هناك ٢٥٠ وظيفة لتختار فيما بينها فى “نمبرز٠٩”. بخصوص الرسومات البيانية و رسومات الجرافيك هناك دمج واضح بين البرامج فى “آي ورك٠٩” مما يمكنك من وضع قيم فى “نمبرز” ثم الحصول عليها على شكل رسم بيانى ثم عرض هذا الرسم البيانى فى “بيجز” الامر كان ممكناً منذ فترة طويلة فى باقة ميكروسوفت اوفيس و الان وصل “لآي ورك”. أخيراً فيما يتعلق بتنظيم المعلومات فى جداول هناك دعم محسن تخصيص مجموعة من الصفوف باسم معين و وضعهم كجزء واحد و كل جزء  به ملخص للتوالى. هذه الامكانية تجعل من السهل عرض مجموعات كبيرة و معقدة من البيانات بشكل مرئي جميل و مريح اثناء مراجعة البيانات بشكل سريع. هناك ايضاً انواع جديدة من الرسوم البيانية لكى تختار بينها و من الاخبار الجيدة توفر صيغ الرسومات المختلطة و و الرسومات ذات المحوريين. صيغة الرسومات البيانية المختلطة يمكنك ان تغطى مجموعة من البيانات بمجموعة اخرى فى وحدتين مختلفتين فى نفس الرسم البيانى, مع امكانية تظليل الفوارق و التشابة. اما الرسومات البيانية ذات المحوريين يمكنك ان تغطى البيانات بوحدات منفصلة فى رسم بيانى واحد مما يوفر انواع افضل من العروض التى تحتوى على بيانات رقمية. الجدير بالذكر ان أبل اضافت للنسخة الجديدة من “نمبرز” خاصية “AppleScript”.

موقع “آي ورك” الاليكترونى

مع الباقة الجديدة قدمت أبل الموقع الاليكترونى iWork.com و الذى يستطيع من خلاله المستخدمين تحميل الملفات و جعلها فى متناول الآخرين ايضاً. يستطيع المستخدمين الاخرين من خلال محركات البحث ( جميع محركات البحث  و ليس سفارى فقط) تحميل الملفات و كتابة التعليقات عليها. الوثائق قابلة للتحميل على شكل ملفات “PDF” للمستخدمين الذين لا يملكون “آي ورك”. الموقع الآن اطلق بشكل تجريبي, أبل اعلنت انه سيكون خدمة مدفوعة فى المستقبل.
