Will Apple TV Be Updated Soon?

If you’re like me, you might be considering Apple TV as a gift for someone this holiday season. But is this the time to buy an Apple TV or should we wait?

Apple TV was announced in September 2007 but started shipping in March 2007 and since then the only hardware change has been to bump the hard drive space. It’s now offered in 40GB and 160GB models. In terms of software, Apple released the 2.0 version in January 2008 and the 2.1 version in July 2008.

So they’ve kept up with the software I guess but that’s a pretty long life cycle for Apple hardware, don’t you think? We’re approaching two years after it first started selling.

I suspect there is a major hardware revision due for the Apple TV, or at least I hope so, because I think I won’t be getting any Apple TVs for friends and family this holiday season.
