Morning After Thoughts on New Apple Notebooks

Last night Apple revamped their entire notebook line giving the MacBook and MacBook Pro a look that is kind of a cross between iMac and MacBook Air. They borrow the black and glassy elements from the iMac and the aluminum all-in-one bottom case (unicase) from the MacBook Air. Throw in a glass all-button trackpad and new graphics cards from NVidia and you have the recipe for Apple’s latest offerings.
Are you happy with these new computers or do you feel like Apple should have done more?
I’m torn. I am 110% sure that when I hold one of these bad boys in my hands for the first time I will want one, nay, I will need one. It will awaken and heighten my lust after them like Apple products often do. But then I look at my 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 200GB HDD (7200RPM!), 15-inch PowerBook bought in January and I feel like the new MacBook Pro has little substantial to offer me so that I’ll upgrade (other than the lust-factor, of course).
Now, I’m not saying I won’t upgrade, I’m just saying that I felt like there should have been more substantial upgrades and perhaps some more new things on offer for me to go “wow”.
And I’m not sure what I expected really. Sure I’ve been saying I want an Apple Tablet for many years but I doubt we’ll see one anytime soon. Sure I’ve been saying I want a notebook form factor Mac for a long time but I don’t think we’ll see that soon either (and the MacBook Air did get a small bump in storage space).
So what could have made me go “wow”? I don’t know is the truth, and that may speak some to Apple’s dilemma in these situations. Put these new notebooks next to anything on offer from the Windows side and they will outshine everything, in looks and in specs, I’m sure. Perhaps it’s Apple’s curse for developing such wonderful things, that we expect more and more and eventually we’ll be disappointed even when they release really cool and wonderful things.
And that they dropped FireWire on the MacBook will not affect me personally a lot but I understand it’s a big bummer for some. I really don’t use FireWire much on my MacBook Pro so if I got a MacBook I don’t see myself changing that. That they didn’t revamp the 17-inch model too puzzles me a bit though, although that happened before too and it eventually caught up.
What the case was last night, I’m not sure. Hopefully I can get my hands on one of these new notebooks soon and then I will return with a thorough review in Shufflegazine.
